Johnston Co., N. C. deeds, 1754, also on 1769 Tax List, Dobbs Co., N. C.)
Moses may have married a Mary Farmer, dau of Henry & Sarah (Ward) Farmer and
granddaughter of Elizabeth (Elam) Ward. (Moses named a son Elam).
(1J3E) Benjamin Ratcliff, thought to be a son of John & Sarah, (no
proof) probably born in Talbot Co., Md., 1725-1730, sold land in Johnston
Co., N. C., in 1754, to his uncle Robert Fellows. Said to have married Jane
Porter, Johnston Co., N. C. (no proof).
(1J3F) Wm Ratcliff, probably a son, b. Talbot Co., Md., ca 1730. His name
appears on the Dobbs Co., N. C., Tax List of 1769, so he was born before
1753.

(1J3) John Ratcliff, probably born on the family plantation "Jacob & John's
Pasture" St. Michael's Parish, Anderbies Creek, Talbot Co., Md., 15 Sept
1694 (010), d. Kinston, N. C., (Lower Falling Creek Society of Friends), ca.
Dec 1771 (102a) probably buried at the Falling Creek Friends Burial Grounds
(now known as Caswell Cemetery?), m. Third Haven Society of Friends Meeting
House, Talbot Co., Md., 1719, 9m, 26d (6 Jan 1720 N. S.), Sarah Fellows,
dau of Robert & Sarah Fellows of Talbot Co., Md.
Third Haven Monthly Meeting Minutes records that "At our monthly meeting
at the head of Third Haven Creek, also called Tread Avon Creek, the 30th
day of the 7th month 1719,John Ratcliff and Sarah Fellows appeared in this
meeting and declared their intentions of marriage, the first time. Peter
Harwood and Thomas Atkinson are to inquire into the man's clearness and
report to the next meeting."
"At a quarterly meeting at our meeting house at the head of Tread Avon
Creek the 28th and 29th of the 8th month 1719, John Ratcliff and Sarah
Fellows appeared at this meeting and declared their intentions of marriage,
the second time. They having the consent of their parents and nothing
appearing to obstruct they are left to their liberty in the truth to effect
their marriage, they appointing time and place and making the same public."
"At a monthly meeting at the house of John Stevens on Dividing Creek, the
25th and 26th of the 9th month 1719, John Ratcliff and Wm Ratcliff's
marriages were accomplished in good order." (118G)(118H)
"At a monthly meeting held at our meeting house at the head of Tread Avon
Creek the 25th and 26th of the 10th month 1734, James Ratcliff (1J2) informs
this meeting that his brother John Ratcliff (1J3) and John Fellows intend to
remove themselves and families unto some part of the government of Carolina
and desire a few lines by way of certificate. This meeting appoints Thomas
Atkinson and James Ratcliff to hear conversation and circumstances so that
care may be taken that they leave on our part in honor and provide a
certificate against the next monthly meeting with approbation and signing."
(118i).
"It is reported to this meeting, 1725, 11m, 29d, that John Hubanks and
Mabel, his wife, are both departed this life and have left two small
children, and that their grandfather, Thomas Hubanks, Gentleman, willing
that they be bound to John RatclifF (1J3) to learn. Peter Harwood and
Thomas Atkinson appointed to advise." Vol. 1, p. 384.
The Talbot Co., Md., Deed records indicate that Sarah (Fellows) Ratcliff
received a 120 acre tract of land "Goughton" 7 July 1720, from her deceased
father's estate, Robert Fellows of Talbot Co., Md., by Robert Fellows and
John Fellows, her brothers, who were administrators of the estate. See Deed
Liber RF #12, Folio 404. "From John and Robert Fellows to your wife, Sarah
(Fellows) Ratcliff."
(1J3) John Ratcliff and Sarah Ratcliff, his wife, sold 25 acres of
"Jacob and John's Pasture" to James Ratcliff (1J2) 18 Mar 1734, Liber JB#14,
Folio 77.
John Ratcliff and Sarah Ratcliff, his wife, sold to Edward Harding, 2 May
1735, 109 acres of land "RATCLIFF'S CHOICE" on King's Creek, Talbot Co.,
Md. See Liber TB #14, Folio 80. (Land also called the wood on Hawk's Branch)
for 20 pounds of money.
John Ratcliff and Sarah Ratcliff, his wife, and Joseph Ratcliff "his
oldest son and heir at law" sold 100 acres of land "Goughton" or Coffston to
Gabriel Horoson, in 1737, see Liber JL#19 , Folio 8-10 and Liber LL#20,
Folio 425.
John Ratcliff made entry for 100 acres of land in Craven Co., N. C., 13
Oct 1738, (103a). Apparently this land was at the juncture of the Neuse
River and Lower Falling Creek, some 5 or 6 miles west of present day
Kinston, N. C.
John Ratcliff petitioned Newton Council, 20 Feb 1739, for a warrant for
300 acres in Craven Co., N. C. (104a). Apparently this petition was denied.
John Ratcliff bought 400 acres of land in Craven Co., N. C., 18 Mar 1745,
from his brother-in-law, Robert Fellows. This land was along the north side
of the Neuse River and along the east side of Lower Falling Creek, and
included part of Tom's Pocosin, a swamp like area. According to N. C. State
Dept. records this plantation was called "Ratcliff's Chance", but this
writer believes the name was really "Ratcliff's Choice" as the home
plantation in Talbot Co. had been called.
John Ratcliff petitioned the Council at Bath Town, N. C., 12 Mar 1745/6
for a warrant for 50 acres of land in Craven Co., N. C. (104c).
John Ratcliff must have been a charter member of the Lower Falling Creek
Monthly Meeting, Society of Friends, which was organized in 1748, as we
read in their minutes, "the Society met regularly at the home of John
Ratcliff" dated 28 Mar 1748 (102a).
John Ratcliff petitioned the Council at New Bern (NC) 6 April 1750 for a
warrant for 250 acres of land in Johnston Co., N. C., (104f). King George
II and Gov. Gabriel Johnston, of the colony of N. C., granted this land, 10
July 1750 (103e). This land was part of John Fellows survey, another
brother-in-law.
(1J3) John Ratcliff Sr sold land in Johnston Co., NC, to his son Joseph
Ratcliff (1J3A). This was probably part of the original Craven Co. land
(106e).
(1J3) John Ratcliff Sr sold land in Johnston Co., NC, in 1754. to his
son John Ratcliff, Jr. (106d).
John Ratcliff was granted 140 acres of land in Dobbs Co., Provinceof N.
C., 10 May 1760, Arthur Dobb, Gov. (103c). (County lines had been changed
again so this land was still in the Kinston area.)
In 1760 the noted Quaker evangelist, Daniel Stanton, visited the home of
(1J3) John Ratcliff at his plantation near Lower Falling Creek Meeting
House. Moses Ratcliff brought the evangelist to the home. See LIFE OF
DANIEL STANTON, page 170, book now at Guilford College Library, Greensboro,
N. C. (027). (This suggsts that Moses was a son of (1J3) John.)
John Ratcliff was granted 90 acres in Dobbs Co., by patent from Province
of N. C., by Gov. Wm Tryon, dated 27 April 1767.
(1J3) John Ratcliff must have died about Dec l771, as letters were
issued by the Secretary of State concerning the distribution of his estate
for the January 1772 session of court, Dobbs Co., N. C. The Talbot Co., Md.,
land records indicate that John Ratcliff died intestate.
John Ratcliff must have died a member in good standing of the Lower
Falling Creek Meeting as their minutes record the appointment of Thomas Cox
as overseer of the meeting "in the room of John Ratcliff, deceased." (102a).
Joseph Ratcliff (1J3A) shoemaker, administrator of the John Ratcliff
estate, secured Letters of Administration from Dobbs Co., N. C., to sell the
property of John Ratcliff and Sarah Ratcliff, 24 April 1775, "it being
certified that John Ratcliff late of Dobbs Co., in this province (NC)
planter, is dead and hath made no will or testament" See Liber JL #20, Folio
434, 435 (014c).
John Ratcliff must have been buried at the Lower Falling Creek Burial
Grounds, or possibly in what is now (1987) known as the Caswell Cemetery
located near the confluence of the Neuse River and Lower Falling Creek, but
wherever the place of burial, no trace of it has been found, by 1988. If
he ever had a headstone it was probably removed in the years 1800-1828, when
the Society of Friends prohibited their members from placing tombstones
larger than 6 inches high, at the graves of their dead.
John Ratcliff left an estate of 500 pounds (English money) when he died
in 1771 (107a). Because of the Revolutionary War John Ratcliff's real
estate was not sold until in 1777, to John Kennedy.
When the writer visited the area around Kinston in July 1966, he found
the Kennedy family had given land about where John Ratcliff had lived, to
the Baptist Orphanage for Boys. The grounds and buildings were attractive
and well kept in a quiet, country atmosphere some five miles west of
Kinston.
One family tradition has it that John Ratcliff and his family first
located along the Roanoke River (NC ?) in 1734. The Third Haven Monthly
Meeting records indicate that John and family left Maryland in 1734, but we
have found nothing in N. C. on them earlier than 1738, where they were
between times is unknown.
John Ratcliff of Dobbs Co., N. C., planter, and Sarah Ratcliff, his wife,
and Joseph Ratcliff, his oldest son and heir at law, sold "Galloway Grant"
adjoining "Goughton" on Tread Haven Creek and on Spring Creek Branch of
Kings Creek (near present day RATCLIFFE MANOR) to John Goldsborough, 11 Dec
1759, see Liber JL#19, Folio 8, l0. (Talbot Co., Md.)
Children of (1J3A) Joseph Ratcliff and his wife, Dobbs Co., N. C.:
(1J3A1) Isaiah Ratcliff, b. Johnston Co., N. C., 24 April 1750.
(1J3A2) William Ratciff, b. Johnston Co., ca. 1752.
(1J3A3) John Young, b. Johnston Co., ca. 1753. (Probably a hired hand.)
(John Young & Joseph Ratcliff served as jurors, Craven Co., 5 Sept 1772)
(1J3A4) Richard Ratcliff, b. Johnston Co., ca. 1755.
(1J3A5) Samuel Ratcliff, b. Johnston Co., ca. l757.
(1J3A6) Lewis Ratcliff, b. DobbsCo., ca. l760.
(1J3A) Joseph Ratcliff, b. Talbot Co., Md., on the family plantation
"RATCLIFF'S CHOICE" ca. l720, d. Dobbs Co., N. C. (?) before 1790, m. time
and place unknown, but probably Craven Co., N. C., ca. 1745, name of girl
unknown, but possibly a Quaker girl from Lower Falling Creek MM.
Joseph Ratcliff bought land in Johnston Co., N. C., from his father, John
Ratcliff Sr., l754 (106c).
Joseph Ratcliff sold land near Kinston, Dobbs Co., N. C., in 1761, to
Jesse Webb.
The Tax List of l769, Dobbs Co., gives the names of Joseph and his sons:
Isaiah, William and John Young. (We assume John Young was a Ratcliff.)
Joseph Ratcliff sold land belonging to his parents John & Sarah Ratcliff,
his wife, in Talbot Co., Md., in 1769, to Wm Marsh Catrope, see Deeds Liber
TL#20, Folio 425.
Joseph Ratcliff performed some kind of military duty in the
Revolutionary War, up to Jan 8, 177l (104).
Joseph Ratcliff sold land in Dobbs Co., N. C., in 1787, to Joseph Groom
(106r).
Joseph Ratcliff sold land to Aaron Ratcliff, probably his nephew, and son
of Moses Ratcliff, recorded in Lenoir Co., NC, in 1814.
The fragmentary records (four pages) of the Lower Falling Creek Meeting
of the Society of Friends, near Kinston, do not mention Joseph Ratcliff. It
is likely that he was disowned by the Quakers for his warlike activities
during the Revolutionary War.
(1J3A1) Isaiah Ratcliff b. on the Ratcliff family plantation "RATCLIFF'S
CHANCE", near Kinston, Johnston Co., N. C., 24 April 1750, d. in

they moved to Walton Co., Fla. where they were living when Annis died.
Joseph and Rebecca continued living in Fla. until 1849, when the
family moved to Bienville Parish, La. The 1850 Census, Red River
Parish shows Joseph a carpenter. Joseph served as a captain of a
company of militia in S. C. during the War of 1812. He held the
office Justice of the Peace at Bienville, La. Children of Joseph and
