(lJ3B) John Ratcliff was born on the family plantation, RATCLIFF'S

CHOICE, near the Tread Avon River and near St. Michaels, Talbot Co.,

Md., l725, and died near Siler City, Chatham Co., N. C., 1803, 3m, 23d,

(l5l) m. probably at Lower Falling Creek Quaker Church, near Kinston,

N. C., 1748, 4m, 7d, Ann Farmer, possibly the dau of Henry and Sarah

(Ward) Farmer, b. ca 1728, d. near Winston Salem, N. C., ll Nov 1822.

This writer believes (lJ3B) John was buried at the Rocky River Friends

Burial Grounds, see Cane Creek Monthly Meeting Records. (#1011)

(lJ3B) John was known as JUNIOR at Kinston, while his father still

lived. He bought land from his father, John Sr., in Johnston Co., N.

C., near Kinston, in l754. He bought land from (lJ3D) Moses Ratcliff,

probably a brother, Johnston Co., N. C., near Kinston, in 1755. (l06f)

(lJ3B) John and Ann (Farmer) Ratcliff's children were all born near

Lower Falling Creek Meeting House, Kinston, N. C.

(lJ3B) John Jr. was positively a member of the Lower Falling Creek

Society of Friends, as their records show "At a meeting held at (Lower)

Falling Creek Monthly Meeting, the second day of the third month 1772,

this meeting appoints Thomas Cox for overseer in the room of John

Ratcliff (Sr) deceased and John Kennedy, Clerk of the meeting...John

Ratcliff, Jr., requests a certificate in order to remove himself and

family within the verge of Cane Creek Monthly Meeting (Chatham Co., N.

C.) Isaac Secuin and John Kennedy are appointed to inquire into the

state and condition of the said John Ratcliff, Jr., and family and

prepare them a certificate, if no obstruction (l02b).

(lJ3B) John Ratcliff Jr and family church membership was transferred in

1772, to the Upper Falling Creek Church, also called "Contentnea" "As

it is the judgment of this meeting (Lower Falling Creek) that inasmuch

as Friends are mostly removed by death and otherwise from the meeting

at Lower Falling Creek that the next ensuing meeting be held at Richard

Cox's near Upper Falling Creek (Contentnea) and so to continue till the

advice of the Quarterly Meeting be known." (l02a)(l07b)

(lJ3B) John Jr.'s name appears on the 1769 List of Taxables, Dobbs Co.,

N. C. (Kinston area). His name appears on the U. S. Census of 1790,

Chatham Co., N. C., Head of a household having 3 males over l6; l male

under 16; 3 females. In 1800 his name appears as the head of a

household having 2 males 10-15; 2 males 45 and up; 1 female 26-45; 1

female 45 and up, Chatham Co., N. C.

(1J3B) John and family granted certificates of transfer from Contentnea

MM to Cane Creek MM, 4 May 1772. (102b) 1 Aug 1772, Cane Creek MM

received John Ratcliff from Contentnea MM (102c). 1 Aug 1772, Ann

Ratcliff and daughters Sarah, Elizabeth and Ann received on Certificate

from Lower Falling Creek MM and transferred to Cane Creek MM (102c).

(1J3B) John bought 400 acres of land on Love's Creek and Blood Run, near

Siler City, Matthews Twp., Chatham Co., N. C., from Robert Cobb, price

90 pounds of money, deed dated 14 Feb 1785 (109a). John sold 113 acres

of Cobb plantation to his son John Jr., 15 Nov 1792, 30 pounds in

money. John sold 18 acres of "Cobb Plantation" to Wm Campbell, 13 Feb

1793, purchase price 20 pounds in money (109f).

(1J3B) John sold 2 1/2 acres of "Cobb Plantation" to Solomon Terrell,

10 Feb 1802 for ten pounds in (province) money (109i)

(1J3B) John Ratcliff, Sr sold 200 acres on Brush Creek, near Siler

City, to John Siler, 7 May 1804, Price $125.00 (109m). John must have

received this land as a grant from the province of N. C., about 1772.

(1J3B) John sold228 acres, part of which must have been part of"Cobb

Plantation" land and part taken up by John from STATE of N. C., to Wm

Duty, 7 May 1804. 300 lbs purchase price (109n).

(1J3B) John Sr left a Will in Chatham Co., N.C, dated 22 Feb 1790 (110a)

In this Will he named his wife, Ann (Farmer) and children:Sarah

Ratcliff, Elizabeth Smith, John Jr., Edom, Amos and Abner, also his

grandsons, (sons of Thomas, deceased): Elias, John, Job, Thomas, Jr.

and Samuel Ratcliff. The grandsons were to receive 85 acres of the

"Cobb Plantation". The grandsons sold the 85 acres in 1813, which

indicates that their grandparents, John and Ann, were dead or moved.

(1J3B) In this Will (1J3B)John Sr. left the remaining part of his

plantation at his death to his son, Abner, with the implied condition

that he care for his parents until their deaths. Abner sold 222 acres

on Love's Creek and Blood Run to Robert Wilkinson, 26 Nov 1807, and

moved to Indiana. This would suggest that both John and Ann were dead

or willing to follow the rest of the family to Ohio or Indiana.

Inasmuch as (1J3B4) John Jr and all his known descendents moved to Ohio

in Sept 1804, and Ann and Sarah, probably his mother and sister, moved

their Quaker Church membership to the Miami Monthly Meeting (Ohio), 4

Aug 1804, show that (1J3B) John Sr must have died in 1803, as we

thought. (It seems Anne (Farmer) Ratcliff died at Winston Salem, NC)

(1J3B) John Ratcliff, Sr. may have been buried at Napton Quaker

Burial Grounds, about 4 miles south of Siler City, instead of the Rocky

River Friends Cemetery, near Ramseur, N. C. The writer was unable in

1963 or 1964 to find any tombstone marking his grave at either

location. From about 1800 to 1828 the Society of Friends prohibited

their members from erecting or having erected any tombstone over 6

inches high, soinitials were all that could mark the final resting

place of a Quaker. About 1800 there seems to have been a preparatory

meeting called Napton, for young Quakers. It is unclear if there was a

meeting house as well, at Napton.

(1J3B1) Sarah Ratcliff, b. Lower Falling Creek, Kinston, Johnston

Co., N. C., 29 Aug 1749 (Old Family Bible). Disowned by Cane Creek

MM, 2 Feb 1799, for marrying out of unity (not according to church

rules). Mentioned in her father's Will of 1790 (102c)(110a).

Sarah Ratcliff d. 16 May 1828, buried Greensboro, N. C. (212).

(1J3B2) Thomas Ratcliff, b. about 5 miles west of Kinston, Johnston

Co., now Lenoir Co., N. C., 28 Nov 1751 (Old Family Bible) and

near the Lower Falling Creek Friends Meeting House and probably

on the old family plantation "RATCLIFF'S CHANCE" of some 800

acres, d. Siler City, Chatham Co., N. C., 21 June 1787, of a

fever. His Will and Testament dated 19 May 1787 was proved .. Aug

1787. Thomas is said to have been buried at Rocky River Friends

Burial Grounds some miles west of Siler City, but possibly at the

Napton Friend Cemetery 4 miles south of Siler City. the writer

could not find his grave at either burial place. Thomas was

married before 6 Mar 1779, in Chatham Co., N. C., " when he was

disowned for marrying out of unity" (110b) Hannah Ward, a sister

of Ruth, who m. (1J3B4) John. Both may have been daughters of

Thomas Ward, whose name appears as the head of a Household in the

1790 Census, near Siler City. The name of (1J3B2) Thomas Ratcliff

along with his father's name appears on the 1769 List of Taxables,

Dobbs Co., N. C., (107c)(107d). That list included the names of

white males 16 or over. Thomas was about 18 years old at that

time. Old Ratcliff Book (#1020)

(1J3B2) Thomas moved with his parents to Chatham Co., N. C., in

1772. Thomas bought land in Chatham Co., in 1785, from Henry Bray

(109b). Thomas' Will of 1787 names his wife,Hannah, and his

brothers Edom, Amos and Abner, and mentions his sons, but does not

give their names. Thomas' father, (1J3b) John left a Will of 1790

that names the sons of Thomas (deceased): (1J3B2A) Job; (1J3B2B)

Samuel; (1J3B2C) Elias; (1J3B2D) John; (1J3B2E) Thomas.

(1J3B2A) Job Ratcliff, b.Chatham Co., N. C.,. about 1780, d.

Wayne Co., Ind., 1829, m. Cane Creek MM, Chatham Co., 23 Oct

1800, Tamar Davis, dau of John & Mary (Chamness) Davis, b. 3

Aug 1780, Job and Tamar are thought to be buried at the Friends

Burial Grounds, 1/2 mile NW of Economy, Ind. Job was disowned

by Cane Creek MM, 7 Nov 1801. Job and his family are said to

have lived in Ky., 1811-1818, where he leased land, then in

1818 he is supposed to have returned to N. C. They couldn't

have stayed long as Tamer and the children: John, Thomas,

Elias, Jesse and Enos transferred their Quaker church

membership from Cane Creek MM (N. C.) to White Water MM, near

Richmond, Wayne Co., Ind., 6 Mar 1819. Then 5 Dec 1821, Tamer

and sons: Thomas, Elias, Jesse, Enos, and Isaac transferred

from New Garden MM, Wayne Co., Ind., to Springfield MM, Wayne

Co., Ind. Tamer and dau Hannah & Mary received on

certificate from Cane Creek MM by New Garden MM, Wayne Co.,

Ind., l6 Oct 1819. (Job was accidentally killed when a tree

fell on him driving an axehandle through his abdomen.)

Kingman, Fountain Co., Ind., 16 Nov 1850, m. Chatham Co., N. C., 1 Sept

1810, Mary Cashatt, dau of John & Margaret Cashatt, b. Chatham Co., N. C.?

1 June 1784, d. Kingman, 1 July 1851, Thomas & Mary are probably buried at

Cashatt Cemetery, Kingman, Ind. Margaret Cashatt died at age 97 and was

buried at Cashatt Cemetery. Cane Creek MM, Chatham Co., N. C., disowned a

Mary (Cashatt) Ratcliff, 1 Sept 1810, for marrying out of unity (102d).

This may be the same couple but their first child being born in 1803 was

slow in reprimanding Mary. The descendents who submitted this data are sure

it is the right couple and it may be. In any event the Thomas who died in

1850 was a soldier in the War of 1812. (1J3B2C) Elias Ratcliff and his

brother, (1J3B2E) Thomas of Chatham Co., sold the 85 acre tract of land

their grandfather left them. Date of sale, 1813, to John Siler, see Vol. T,

page 60. The Thomas Ratcliff living in Union Twp., Highland Co., Ohio, in

1820 seems about the right age and his children about the right age, so

they may have lived in Highland Co. before moving to Ind. (THE HISTORY ROSS

AND HIGHLAND Co., OHIO, by Williams Bros. 1880, page 497, records that

Thomas and family moved from N. C. to Highland Co. in 1814.)
